Central Mountain, Bald Eagle Area, Jersey Shore and Bellefonte have a number of talented girls wrestlers in their lineup at various weights. And that talent translated to success at the District 6 and District 4 championships recently.
The next step for those standouts from their schools is this weekend’s Central Regional tournament on Saturday at Milton High School, which features a number of talented wrestlers from throughout Pennsylvania looking to get to the state tournament.
One wrestler who already knows what it takes to get to the state tournament is Central Mountain’s Kendall Wagner. The two-sport standout — who plays basketball for Bucktail’s girls basketball team — took silver this year at 170 pounds at districts and is set to medal once again at regionals.
Last winter, Wagner took silver at regionals and became the Wildcats’ first girls wrestler state placewinner as she took eighth.
Wagner, however, is in a brutal bracket this year at 170. The field features the top two state-ranked wrestlers in the state in Punxsutawney senior Jael Miller and Greater Nanticoke junior Sierra Ripka.

Miller is ranked No. 1 in the state with a 24-0 record and won the District 9 title while Ripka is ranked No. 2 and won the District 2 title. Wagner is on Ripka’s side of the bracket.
Wagner is 22-6 this year and will face District 2 fourth-place finisher Annalia Ward in the first round. If Wagner earns a victory, she’ll have to wrestle either Athens’ Abigail Wagner (22-8), the District 4 champion, or Huntingdon’s Lillian Casterline, the District 6 fifth-place finisher.
While having the top two wrestlers in the state in your bracket may be daunting for some wrestlers, Wagner has experience at regionals and states last year and has faced some of the best in the state already in her last two years. She knows what it takes to execute at the highest level to advance.
Wagner earned an honorable mention state ranking at 170, as did Jersey Shore’s Isabella Gottschall.
Gottschall is no stranger to regionals or states either. The Bulldog qualified for last year’s state tournament and is a District 4 runner-up this year. Gottschall, who is 26-4, will face Bradford Area’s Dani Ordiway, a District 9 fourth-place finisher in the first round and would face either Montomgery’s Malayna Beattie or Delaware Valley’s Emily Smith in the quarterfinals if she wins.

TIM WEIGHT/For the Express Bald Eagle Area’s Grace Crestani reacts after securing a pin during a tournament this season. The senior occupies the top seed at 190 at the Central Regional girls wrestling tournament, set to take place at Milton on Saturday.
Central Mountain’s Austynn Falls is having an outstanding year and is 26-3 after she took silver at the District 6 tournament. Falls has an honorable mention state ranking, as does Hughesville’s Avery Earnest (27-5), the No. 2 seed in the bracket.
Falls’ 26 wins are also the most in the 142-pound field behind only Earnest’s 27. Falls will wrestle Wyoming Valley West’s Lily Shymanski in the first round and could see either Jordana Steffen of Juniata or Elizabeth Varner of Selinsgrove in the quarterfinals with a win.
Central Mountain’s Ashlynn Miller is 21-6 and took second in the District 6 championships at 235. She’s entered into the Central Regional tournament and will look to make a run. In order to do so, however, she’ll have to go through some tough opponents as two top-5 ranked wrestlers are in the bracket as well.
No 5-ranked Mylah Steinbuch and No. 3-ranked Jaidyn Mikulak are the Nos. 1 and 2 seeds, respectively, in the field. Steinbuch is 18-1 while Mikulak is 18-2.
Miller is on Mikulak’s side of the field and the Wildcat gets Delaware Valley’s Julia Scheuermann in the first round. Last winter, Miller finished fifth and just missed reaching states. She’ll look to better that finish this year. In order for Miller to win gold, she would likely have to knock off both Mikulak and Steinbuch in back-to-back matches.

TIM WEIGHT/For the Express Jersey Shore’s Olivia Spotts wrestles during a tournament this season. The senior is set to represent the Bulldogs at the Central Regional girls wrestling tournament, Saturday at Milton.
Bald Eagle Area’s Grace Crestani earned the No. 1 seed in the 190-pound field with a 20-4 record after she claimed gold at the District 6 championships. The Eagle also earned an honorable mention state ranking. She awaits her quarterfinal opponent and will face either District 2 third-place finisher Kristen Langelotti of Delaware Valley or Shikellamy’s Kirsten Grubbs, the District 4 third-place finisher.
The No. 2 seed at 190 is Greater Nanticoke’s Michelle Pastuizaca, a senior who won the District 2 title and is 21-7.
Bald Eagle Area’s Eden Eveleth (106) is experienced in the postseason. The Bald Eagle Area senior is 16-8 this year and took silver at districts and was a regional qualifier last year. She has a first-round matchup against Rosa SanClementi of Wallenpaupack and no doubt Eveleth is hoping to get to the state tournament this year again. Eveleth was a bronze medalist last year at regionals but did not place at states.
Another Eagle in the tournament is Addison Tice, a freshman who took silver at districts and is 17-7. She will face Wellsboro junior Jordan Rumsey (13-9) in the first round at 112.
Bald Eagle Area’s Lily Spicer took fourth at the District 6 tournament and is 12-8. She’ll have a first-round matchup with District 2 runner-up Matilda Serrano of Greater Nanticoke (18-12). A win by Spicer would see her advance to the quarterfinals against either Hughesville standout Julia Ritter (20-8) or Huntingdon’s Emily Waters.

TIM WEIGHT/For the Express Bellefonte’s Ella Johnsonbaugh wrestles against Sugar Valley’s Olivia Johnson during a tournament this season. The freshman is set to represent the Red Raiders at 155 at the Central Regional on Saturday.
At 124, Jersey Shore’s Olivia Spotts earned a regional berth after taking fourth at districts. The Bulldog is an impressive 26-9 her senior year and faces West Branch’s Natalie Yingling in the first round. Spotts’ 26 wins are among the most in the 14-wrestler field as only Montgomery’s Emily Muprhy (36-0) and Crestwood’s Rachel Shoemaker (29-7) have more. Murphy is ranked No.1 in the state.
Bellefonte’s Ella Johnsonbaugh, a freshman, finished the District 6 tournament as a fourth-place finisher and is currently 14-6. She has a first-round matchup against Emma Selfe of Crestwood (25-12) in a tough matchup.
Another Raider in the tournament is Bellefonte’s Bailee Scott, a District 6 fifth-place finisher who’s 11-14. She is competing at 155 and has a first-round matchup against Addison Dangle of Jersey Shore. Dangle won the District 4 title and is an impressive 21-3 this year. The winner of that matchup advances to the quarterfinals to face either Chestnut Ridge’s Juliet Alt or Alexandra Moran of Western Wayne.
