Jersey Shore girls cruise in opener against Warrior Run
JERSEY SHORE – Bullish on defense.
The Jersey Shore girls basketball team opened the season in grand fashion as the veteran squad defeated a very young Warrior Run Tuesday in the Dawg Pound at Jersey Shore.
The Bulldogs were led by a game-high 25-point scoring performance by Peyton Dincher. She finished her day with four treys and six rebounds as well. She was just one of four players that finished in double figures for the Bulldogs.
Following up Dincher’s 25 was Cailyn Schall with 15 points while teammate Sophia Stover posted 14.
Rounding out the double-digit scorers was Avery DePasquale with 12.
“The kids came out and played hard. They were excited about their first game,” said Jersey Shore coach Mike Schall. “We are an older group. Sometimes at this time of the season you see all the work that they’ve done in the off season and it kind of showed through a little bit. The older group was ready to get the season started.”
And started they did, the defense held the Defenders off the scoreboard for almost the entire first quarter.Dincher came out primed and ready to go as she scored the first seven points of the game. Her first four points came from the foul line.
On her next trip down, Dincher squared up and blasted a triple, upping it to a 7-0 advantage causing Warrior Run to call a time out with 5:30 left in the first quarter.
After the time out, Sophia Stoner stole the ball at the mid court and layed it in for lay up.
Jersey Shore forced the Defenders into 10-plus first quarter turnovers. After Stoner’s bucket, Dincher picked up a steal of her own and also popped a field goal.
Minutes later, she would repeat the effort and posted yet another bucket, upping the lead to 12-0. Teammate Kylie Shaw got into the act as well, as her steals led to three consecutive trips to the foul line where she went 4 for 6.
Going into the final two minutes, the Bulldogs had built up a commanding 18-0. Warrior Run netted their first basket at 1:10 left on a 3-pointer by Ava Derr. When the buzzer sounded to end the first period, Jersey Shore held a 24-5 advantage and never looked back.
Things continued to shine for the Bulldogs in the second.
Defensively, Jersey Shore continued to run its offense through its creating turnovers and rebounds as they outscored the Defenders 26-2 to take a 50-7 lead going into the intermission.
Leading the way in the quarter was Cailyn Schall with 12 points. With the 43-point advantage, the second half started under the mercy rule.
But that still didn’t stop the Bulldogs from continuing pouring out the points as they collected 13 points in both third and fourth quarters en route to the 76-12 victory.
