Raiders host Johnstown in District 6 playoffs
Win and you’re in. That’s the scenario that Bellefonte’s football team finds itself in. The Raiders are the No. 2 seed in the District 6 Class AAAA tournament and host Greater Johnstown tonight for a 7 p.m. game.
If Bellefonte wins, it finds itself in the District 6 championship game against top-seeded Juniata, who received a bye.
But, Bellefonte has to win first in order to get that berth in the championship game.
The Trojans enter districts with a 2-8 record and haven’t had the best of seasons. Johnstown currently is riding a five game losing streak. Juius Reed leads the Trojans at quarterback. The sophomore has played all 10 games and has thrown for 2,008 yards with 22 touchdown passes. He’s also the team’s leading rusher as he’s run for 747 yards, averaging 74.7 per game on the ground and 200.8 in the air.
Reed has thrown to a number of different receivers this year as six players have at least seven receptions. Zymir Reed leads the team with 57 catches for 919 yards and nine touchdowns. Kaleem Talyor has caught 27 passes for 504 and three touchdowns, Mekhi Matthews has reeled in nine for 129 and four touchdowns and Raheem Braswell has caught 15 catches for 118 yards and three touchdowns.
On the defensive side of the ball, senior Elijah Murphy is a force that offensive lines have to account for. The senior Trojan has a team-high 12 1/2 tackles for loss, has registered 29 solo tackles, 23 assisted (52 total) and is averaging 5.2 per game.
Donier Simpson and Deshawn Legrier lead Bellefonte’s defense with 39 and 37 solo tackles, respectively. The team also has 14 1/2 sacks this year, four of which coming from Murphy.
Bellefonte enters districts with a 6-4 record and lost the regular-season finale against Richland.
Liam Halterman is having success in the air with the Raiders as he’s thrown for 984 yards, going 69 for 113, with eight touchdown passes. While Bellefonte’s passing attack hasn’t put up crazy numbers, it’s been complemented with a solid running game.
The Raiders have run for 2,027 yards as a team as the Raiders have a run-by-committee backfield. Halterman has a team-high 471 rushing yards and nine rushing touchdowns, Ka’ven Smith-Kirk has rushed for 393 yards, Aden Howell has run for 386 and four touchdowns, Isaac Gall ran for 287 and three touchdowns and Ashten Howell has 249 rushing yards with two rushing touchdowns.
Bellefonte’s defense will need to pressure Reed and limit what he can do.
