Shore’s Bubb, Herman fall in District 4 doubles quarterfinals

It wasn’t the run that Jersey Shore was hoping for. After winning a repeat title in the District 4 team tournament on Thursday and seeing Jersey Shore’s Peyton Dincher reach the District 4 singles final for the third consecutive year, the Bulldogs were hoping to see a doubles team get to the semifinals.

Jersey Shore’s Kendall Bubb and Julia Herman had a great run on Saturday in their own right by reaching the District 4 quarterfinals. The duo ended up running into top-seeded Josie Bendle and Gyovanna Sundaresan in the quarterfinals though and couldn’t get a win to advance.

The Bulldogs duo ended up losing to the Danville pair, 6-0, 6-0, at Williamsport on a sunny Saturday afternoon in the district quarterfinals.

South Williamsport’s Livy Harvey and Emily Holtzapple will face top-seeded Bendle and Sundaresan of Danville in one of the semifinals on Monday at the Central PA Tennis Center at 1 p.m.. In the bottom half of the bracket, it’ll be Hughesville’s Annaka Bruder and Georgia Randall facing South Williamsport’s Emma McLaughlin and Mylee Morrison.

South Williamsport hasn’t had a doubles district champion in the 2000s. Hughesville’s last doubles champions in districts was in 2016 when Rachel Thomas and Allison Mattuci won the title.

“Kendall and Julia had a great run today. They’ve never played together before, we had to make some changes and had a player get injured,” Jersey Shore coach Ann-Marie Dincher said. “So Kendall stepped up. She’s a second doubles player and Julia’s a first doubles player. They had a good run, we knocked out a seeded team and then they lost to the No. 1 seed.”

Having never played together before, the two opened the tournament with a 6-0, 6-1 win against Montoursville’s Lily Fortin and Kendall Simms before having to play a tough first set against Loyalscok’s Caroline Crawford and Gia Biacchi. The Bulldog pair and Lancer duo played hard in that first set, going 7-6 before Shore won the tiebreaker (7-2). The Bulldogs then closed it out with a 6-0 second-set victory.

“Going into the second set we just made some simple adjustments and we followed three simple rules. They actually listened and we were able to cruise to a 6-0 win in the second set,” Dincher said.

“I am beyond proud of Kendall because she has been nothing but great for us this entire season, and same with Julia,” Dincher said. “They were good and they just never played together (before).

Bendle and Sundaresan beat Bubb and Herman, 6-0, 6-0, as the Danville pair routinely hit hard shots directly back at Jersey Shore and were able to play well throughout both sets.

“I think the best thing is they have great personalities,” Dincher said of Bubb and Herman. “They never give up and they encourage each other to go after the next point.”

The Bulldogs had to unfortunately forfeit a match in the first round, meaning Bubb and Herman were the only two Jersey Shore players in the field to make a possible run.

“That really hurt,” Dincher said of the forfeit. “It shifted everybody into different positions, but in the end, we had a terrific season.”

The Bulldogs definitely had a great season. Dincher took silver at districts and advanced to states in singles competition, the Bulldogs won their second consecutive team title in districts and are also heading to the state tournament. While they didn’t advance to the semifinals, Bubb and Herman were quarterfinalists at least.

“Oh my gosh, this is the best team Jersey Shore has had in a long time,” Dincher said.

Next for Shore is the team tournament in states and Dincher and her team are excited to keep playing.

“We’re super excited to be repeat district champs, that was a goal from the start of the season. This was an undefeated season where we were 17-0 in the regular season and finished with a perfect 20-0 (record) as district champs,” Dincher said. “We’re ready to move on and take it just one match at a time.”

Bucktail had a pair of teams in the tournament on Saturday. The team of Lola English and Matti Mason had to compete in the preliminaries and defeated Mifflinburg’s Holly swartz and Rhyann Kurtz. From there, the duo received a tough draw having to face Bruder and Randall of Hughesville. The Spartans beat English and Mason, 6-0, 6-0.

Bucktail’s others doubles team of Eva Sockman and McKenna Bissman earned a first-round victory by defeating Leiwsburg’s Ella Markunas and Morgan Streiby, 6-2, 6-3. In the second round, Sockman and Bissman came up shy against South’s Harvey and Holtzapple, 6-0, 6-3.
