Howard teen identified as drowning victim

LOCK HAVEN — An 18-year-old Howard teen reportedly drowned over the weekend after Lock Haven Fire Department and other emergency personnel were called to the West Branch of the Susquehanna River near the Lock Haven City Beach.

According to a release from LHFD Chief Tyler Wooding, the department was alerted to two swimmers in distress at about 4:45 p.m. on Saturday, June 22.

Units arrived on scene to find boaters attempting to rescue a 22-year-old man, with no sighting of the second victim.

The first victim was brought to shore where he was provided medical care and transported to UPMC Lock Haven where he was later life flighted to Geisinger Danville in critical condition, Wooding reported.

“After an extended search by responders, the second person, an 18-year-old man, was located below the water’s surface but was deceased,” Wooding said. The Jay Street bridge was closed on either side of the river as the search was conducted.

On Sunday, Clinton County Coroner Zach Hanna identified the vicitm as Gavin Frey, 18, of Howard.

Hanna noted no further details were available as of Sunday.

The Keystone Central School District is offering support to those in need following the accident.

“Support will be available (today) at CMHS for anyone who may need support in dealing with the unfortunate drowning of one of our young community members,” a release from the district said.

Those who would like to utilize this support can do so between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. at the high school by using the main office entrance.
