LOCK HAVEN — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced the following schedule of maintenance activities in Clinton County the week of April 21.

PennDOT performs year-round maintenance in its mission to provide a safe, efficient transportation system, and the scope of work in Clinton County for the coming week is as follows:

Bridge Maintenance & Cleaning

— Route 120 at a bridge spanning Tangascootac Creek four miles Northwest of Lock Haven in Colebrook Township. Monday, April 21, through Friday, April 25, PennDOT will implement short-term lane closures while completing this work.

— Route 220 at a pair of bridges spanning the West Branch of the Susquehanna River one mile East of McElhattan. Monday, April 21, through Friday, April 25, PennDOT will implement short-term lane closures while completing this work.

— Route 44 at a bridge spanning Pine Creek two miles northeast of Avis. Monday, April 21, through Friday, April 25, PennDOT will implement short-term lane closures while completing this work.

— Route 1002 (Island Road/East Water Street) at the Petty Officer Stephen “Turbo” Toboz, Jr. Memorial bridge spanning the West Branch of the Susquehanna River one mile east of Lock Haven in Castanea Township. Monday, April 21, through Friday, April 25, PennDOT will implement short-term lane closures while completing this work.

— Route 1002 (Island Road/East Water Street) at a bridge spanning the Susquehanna River two miles east of Lock Haven in Dunnstable Township. Monday, April 21, through Friday, April 25, PennDOT will implement short-term lane closures while completing this work.

— Route 1005 (Park Avenue/McElhattan Drive) at a bridge spanning the Susquehanna River between the intersections of McKinney Road in Wayne Township and Island Road in Dunnstable Township. Monday, April 21, through Friday, April 25, PennDOT will implement short-term lane closures while completing this work.

Pennsylvania has some of the oldest bridges in the country, with an age of more than 50 years on average. Preventive maintenance is vital in extending the life of the structures. As such, PennDOT maintenance crews perform some bridge deck patching and structural repairs.

Shoulder Maintenance

— Interstate 80 eastbound between mile markers 185 and 194. Monday, April 21, through Friday, April 25, PennDOT will implement short-term lane closures while completing this work.

— Route 880 beginning two miles east of Loganton, to the intersection of Rauchtown Road in Crawford Township. Monday, April 21, through Friday, April 25, PennDOT will implement short-term lane closures while completing this work.

Shoulder cutting removes excess material and debris from unpaved shoulder areas. Shoulder grading involves the shaping and stabilizing of those same areas. Both operations improve drainage, allow water to leave the roadway and eliminate shoulder drop-offs. These are crucial highway maintenance operations because when drainage systems do not function properly, water collects on the road, weakens pavement, accelerates the formation of potholes and creates the potential for icing conditions in the winter months.

This schedule is subject to change due to weather conditions, emergencies or other unforeseen interruptions.
