A Voice from the Past

Howard Peters, Ph.D, Bald-Eagle Nittany Class of 1958, has asked the Express and the community for help in identifying the gentlemen in this photo. According to Peters, he found the photo dated 1954 with a few names on the back. The photo read, “Back row: Jack Shangraw, (SS teacher & Sylvania Engineer), Glenn Hackenburg., ______?, ______? , Carl (Skip) Irvin, ______? Yearick?. Bill Martin, Paul Moore. Front row: _____?, Doyle Scantlin, Malcolm Heimer, Bill Brungard, Bruce Peters, Jerry Peters, Howard Peters, Ronald Rupert. According to Peters, SS Teacher Jack Shangraw, originally from Avis, was a WWII Navy Vet. In 1942 his Navy ship, the New Orleans, was torpedoed by the Japanese in the South Pacific. Half of the ship split off and sank with those aboard. Jack was in the half that stayed afloat.
