‘Marvels of Majesty’: WSO to present special concert with renowned pianist Feb. 11
WILLIAMSPORT — The Williamsport Symphony Orchestra, led by Maestro Gerardo Edelstein, is excited to present Marvels of Majesty on Tuesday, Feb. 11, at 7:30 p.m. at the Community Arts Center.
This stunning concert will feature the dazzling Piano Concerto in G major by Maurice Ravel, with celebrated pianist Byeol Kim, and Anton Bruckner’s majestic Symphony No. 7 in E Major.
A special highlight of the evening will be the rare use of Wagner tubas, a unique brass instrument designed by Richard Wagner, adding a distinctive richness to Bruckner’s symphony.
Steinway Artist Byeol Kim has earned critical acclaim for her “ingeniously colorful imagination” (Agata Nowakowska) and her “hushed performances as an operatic singer on the piano” (Cleveland Classical).
A top prizewinner in the Cleveland, Paderewski, Dallas and Washington International Piano Competitions, Kim has performed at world-renowned venues including Carnegie Hall and Koerner Hall. She has collaborated with leading orchestras such as the Cleveland Orchestra and the West Virginia Symphony and has worked with esteemed ensembles like the Escher String Quartet.
Kim is a passionate educator, currently serving as Assistant Professor of Music at Rollins College, and a winner of the 2019 Astral National Auditions. Her innovative approach to classical music includes multimedia concert experiences and social advocacy projects, making her one of today’s most exciting and multifaceted artists.
A rare and unique feature of Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7 is the inclusion of the Wagner tubas, a special type of brass instrument invented by composer Richard Wagner. These instruments were designed specifically for Wagner’s operas to blend the sound of the French horn with the timbre of the tuba. Their distinct sound is deep, resonant and full of mystery, offering a rare sonic texture that adds an extraordinary dimension to Bruckner’s symphonic masterpiece.
The program will include:
— Piano Concerto in G major by Maurice Ravel, featuring Byeol Kim, piano
— Symphony No. 7 in E Major by Anton Bruckner with special appearance of Wagner tubas
