Taking a Toll
The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission yesterday revealed a map showing the preliminary toll locations on Interstate 80. The green dots show the nine zones where the gantries are proposed to be located (there is no “D” zone). The yellow sections of the highway show where the gantries may be located, while the blue sections are areas that have been eliminated. Officials are not expected to select the final sites until sometime this fall.

HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission officials believe a plan that would eliminate the tolling of many local residents using Interstate 80 daily will alleviate some of the concerns over the proposal, without affecting revenues.
Under plans released Wednesday, the commission proposes having nine automated “no-stop” tolling booths along the interstate from the Ohio to New Jersey state lines.

Literary Love Affairs
Wed, May 28, 2008 @ 5:03PM
Reading one book often turns into reading several more, in my case. Often I will pick up a book on recommendation from a friend or because it catches my eye in the bookstore, and then I fall in love with the author. Some of the authors I've fallen in love with in the past include Jodi Picoult, Ian McEwan, Ann Brashares, and Jhumpa Lahiri. When you find a book that satisfies your every reading desire, it only makes you want more, and the most logical place to look is in other books written by the same person. Well, my latest literary love affair is with British writer Nick Hornby. A few of Hornby's novels have been turned into popular films, including High Fidelity with John Cusack, Fever Pitch with Drew Barrymore and Jimmy Fallon, and About a Boy with Hugh Grant. I picked up the novel version of About a Boy while I was studying abroad in England last week. I have always wanted to read this book, but I just never seemed to get around to it.

Summer Time
Wed, May 14, 2008 @ 1:20PM
Forgive me for my lack of writing the past two weeks. It was the end of the semester, schedules got crazy, and packing for summer became a chore. With summer break now here, I will not be living with my friends in our apartment, I am at home in Scranton. What does that mean? That means that I will try to keep up with the theme of college life (also campus life) but I may stray from it a bit at times.

A Legacy
Thu, May 1, 2008 @ 3:36PM
When time becomes short, humans find the time to pass things to the next generation. Grandmothers leave money to their grandchildren while father's leave tools to their children, both hoping that the meager gift they give will change the future of the recipient. This idea is not only confined to death. Neighbors give partings gifts of furniture, former lovers give one last gift in hopes of repairing what was lost, an students pass books to the next generation of the potentially educated. The idea that objects and knowledge should be passed on is not uncommon, but the event that causes a legacy to be passed on can be rather strange. I have been a student of Lock Haven University for five years. In those five years, I have gained a great deal of knowledge, received the gift of inspiration, garnered a collection of books, and found insight into my life.

Ridin' the Storm Out with Hybrid Ice
Wed, July 23, 2008 @ 6:48PM
I had the pleasure of interviewing Hybrid Ice Sunday for a future article in The Express. This was my first time interviewing a band for an article and I wanted to be prepared for any surprises that could be thrown my way. I went to the store and bought my first digital voice recorder and organized my questions for the band. I interviewed local residents who had seen Hybrid Ice perform at Assante’s and I even contacted Paul Mahoney, who owned Assante’s and originally hired the band, to ask him a few questions.
